A visitor - Snakes in Kwa-Zulu Natal! {What's it Like Where I Live?}

You can read all about this little fella HERE
- he is actually totally harmless...

I have solved the problem of the local troop of vervet monkeys
eating our fruit out of our fruit bowls by keeping the fruit
"locked up" in birdcages now, yes really...fortunately they are
trendy decor items at the moment :) but last week one of our
kitties brought this baby snake in through the window!!

I am wanting to start a scrapbook that is more "random"
with pages about local "things", stuff I like, etc, that the
kids can look back on to have memories of me and what
makes me tick rather than always  just about themselves.

So this will go into that album.  These snakes are very
indicative of the area in which we are currently living so
relevant to our daily lives here.  We have lived in 3
different houses here in the past 7 years and have seen
them in each property we have lived in even though each
of those properties has been in a different suburb,
but within the same general area.

Yes, yes, that's what I think scrapping is about, & it makes for really interesting reading, methinks & others find out about your local area. Shame poor snakey is dead...pretty colours. MY Dad used to errrr 'collect' live snakes if we were out driving & they happened to be crossing the road...we'd often have DEADLY tiger, black, brown or copperhead snakes in a fish tank inside for a few weeks, 'til he decided to release them. SCARY!!!! Oh, it is/was a dandelion, that 'puff ball seed thingy'...think it was you who asked???? On hol's atm; hard to get a comp to work...back home & back to normal soon:):):):)

Scrapping the everyday stuff is great. And makes for interesting story-telling and loads to reminisce about in future!

Poor snake though...:(

That is one great looking snake (if you can possibly say that about snakes) but I am glad it isn't in my house. And love the idea of the birdcage.

Looks so much like a boomslang. Eish! Glad my kitties stick to bird and mice gifts.

We have a few snakes here, all harmless, but monkeys... uh no. Lots of bugs this time of year... ugh. Great picture though, I think your album idea is brilliant!

Ok, so I think that snake is adorable...sorry, but I like critters!!! And kudos to kitty for being a good hunter!! I think your idea is awesome as I will enjoy learning. I'm going to post some photos of here, but I hardly can imagine it would be as interesting as there. No monkeys, just deer...lots of snow, nothing exotic...

Eeeeeeks, Helen! You are a brave soul. Monkeys, we have lots in India and yes, they are a menace. With deforestation, they are making their way into urban areas in search of food. Sad but true.
Love the idea of your 'random things in life' scrapbook.

Aack I hate the snakes! We used to have a tree in our front yard that used to be full of hundreds of baby snakes all at once every year, I think they used to lay the eggs in there or something, I hated it! My maid was petrified of snakes and always used to push me at them to get rid of them lol. Luckily most of them are not poisonous but a couple of years ago when my sister was visiting my parents in Durban she walked into the loo and there was a Black Mamba in there! The monkeys at my parents have also been known to steal sweets and then leave the papers lying around! :)

I forgot how thankful I am to live in country without snakes until I read your post. Monkeys I could do. Sneaky slithery things - no!!! You can keep them baby!Lol

Oh dear Helen! That snake is a beautiful color but YIKES! I would have screamed!!! We have Rattlesnakes here and that is more than I can handle!!!

Beautiful colours this grass snake has. I am always amazed at how these beautiful colours can come from just a tiny little egg - the same for birds. Thats one thing I love about Gauteng, I can feed the birds, which I could never do in Kloof, Durban because of the mischievous monkeys - but they were never a serious nuisance and also never came into our home. We loved the family with the young ones trying to make their way across overhead telephone lines - had many a laughs at them.

Eeeeek!! as beautiful as this little guy is, amazing colouring, anything slithering makes my skin crawl! so happy to live in a country where the only slithering thing is a toad or perhaps a worm in the flower bed. Love reading and learning about the different places and lives we all live, something that is everyday stuff in one place is really exotic for somebody else. Look forward to learning more about you Helen! xoxo

Helen your life is so interesting, amazing and a bit 'scary'. This snake is so beautiful, such a wonderful colour but I don't think I would be very calm if it was in my house!! May be you could have another blog, kind of an "African daily journal", I would find it fascinating. xx

Yikes, harmless or not I'd run a mile LOL. Life in South Africa is never boring by the sounds of it!
